Lao Chai Village

Black H’mong life among the terraces

✓ Visited on 4 of our tours

A Black H’mong village in the heart of Muong Hoa Valley, surrounded by some of the most photographed rice terraces in Sapa.

Lao Chai sits on the slopes of Muong Hoa Valley and is one of the largest Black H’mong communities near Sapa. Wooden houses are scattered between the terraces, and daily life still follows the farming calendar: planting, tending buffalo and harvesting rice.

The Black H’mong are known for their indigo-dyed hemp clothing, which you will often see drying in front of houses. Many women sell embroidery and handicrafts along the paths, and some families welcome visitors into their homes.

Short walking trails lead from the road down through the fields and along the stream, making Lao Chai an easy introduction to village life for travellers who do not want a long trek.

Highlights of Lao Chai Village

  • Easy walk through rice terraces and village paths
  • Traditional Black H’mong houses and indigo-dyed clothing
  • Views across the valley towards Ta Van
  • Handicraft stalls run by local women
